Talking to God
"The righteous cry out and the Lord hears them." Psalm 34:17 (NIV)
A cell phone and an accomplice with a cell phone
(As you’re greeting the children, have an accomplice call your cell phone.)
What’s that noise? Oh, no! Somebody’s cell phone is ringing in church! Uh-oh! It’s mine! I’d better
get that. (Take phone out of pocket and answer.)
Hello? (Act surprised and look up toward the ceiling. Look back at children, point upward and
mouth, “It’s Him!”) Yes, Lord. Yes, this is Steve. The kids? They’re here. OK, I’ll tell them. I’ll tell
them that, too. OK. Is that all? Alright, thanks for calling. Goodbye – I mean Amen.
(Close phone and turn to children.) Guess who that was! Well…do you really think that was God
on the phone? No, of course not. I was just kidding. But let’s talk about talking to God.
First of all, do you need a cell phone to talk to God? No, we don’t need a phone. Do you need to
talk out loud or can you just pray in your head?
How about where you can talk to God? Sure we talk to God here in church, but where else can you
talk to God? (Solicit suggestions such as at home, at school, walking down the street, etc.)
Well, you can talk to God anywhere, anytime about anything. And the Bible says that God will be
listening. Psalm 34:17 says, “The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them.”
So if you have something on your mind, God wants to hear from you. It doesn’t matter when, it
doesn’t matter where. And you don’t even need a cell phone!
That’s something we should pray about: Heavenly Father, we thank you that we can talk to you
anywhere, anytime about anything. We pray you’ll help us to remember to do it more often and we
thank you so much for listening to us. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
